										<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>No matter how well prepared you are, things can always go wrong. There is no greater example of this than with live performances. When you’re performing, there is one key difference between things going wrong in rehearsal and when it happens live in front of an audience:</p>
<p>Carrying on.</p>
<p>In a rehearsal, you can stop and fix the mistake, take it from the top and perform flawlessly, as if the mistake never happened. In a live performance, however, this luxury does not exist: mistakes are seen (or heard), they are acknowledged and they have to be worked around. The show must go on.</p>
<p>No moment was this more true than during The Talent’s New Year’s Eve performance at the Emirates Palace. We were in full swing, playing to a lively crowd of guests when the unthinkable happened. Our keyboard player, Jamie Brooks, had the keyboard slip out from under him and crash down onto the stage, during the middle of a song.</p>

<p><center><iframe loading="lazy" src="https://player.vimeo.com/video/315470447" width="640" height="360" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen="allowfullscreen"></iframe></center>As you can see, the keyboard appeared to have a mind of its own, and it just keeled over. Fortunately, as professional performers, we are always prepared for incidents like this. Instrument and tech malfunctions are just something you can’t always prevent, and when the worst happens you just need to carry on. Like a true performer, Jamie carried on playing knelt down on the floor in front of his fallen keyboard. We needed our keyboard player, and he wasn’t going to let an equipment malfunction get in the way of finishing our show for the audience.</p>
<h2><strong>Powering Through</strong></h2>
<p>Whatever the show, whether a band, a solo act or a theatrical play, all performers will have to deal with the unexpected at some point.</p>
<p>Back in 2005, comedian Julian Clary slipped down a flight of stairs during a matinee performance of the pantomime Cinderella, chipping a bone in his right foot. Despite the pain, he graciously limped through the rest of the performance before being taken to hospital. Clary even refused to let his injury prevent him from performing the entire show again later that night in a wheelchair, stating that he had never missed a show in his life.</p>
<p>In 2015, Foo Fighters frontman Dave Grohl plunged down from the stage early on during a performance and injured his leg. Grohl was whisked away backstage for treatment whilst the band carried on, but he soon returned to the stage in a bandaged-up leg to carry on performing.</p>
<p>Just on the cusp of her career taking off, in 2008 Lady Gaga dealt expertly with her soundboard cutting out suddenly in the middle of a song. She carried on singing acapella and finished the entire number with no backing music.</p>
<p>Finally, who could forget the (admittedly fictional) moment during the film Mean Girls, where Lindsey Lohan’s character and the rest of the Plastics are performing a dance number and the stereo playing the music gets kicked off the stage and breaks. To break the awkward silence and stilted moment, Lindsey Lohan’s character begins to sing the song, eventually prompting the other girls and the audience to join in, and they finish their dance in spectacular style.</p>
<p>What all of these performers have in common is their resilience, refusing to let a setback prevent them from finishing a performance. At our New Year’s Eve show we didn’t want to let a technical issue stop us from putting on a fantastic performance for all of the guests. We powered through and delivered on our promise of an incredible show to welcome in the New Year in style.</p>
<p>During a live show, things can, and will, go wrong. But when they do, you just need to carry on and put your best foot forward; the audience demand a show and you are there to deliver.</p>
<p>Afterall, the show must go on.</p>

<p>Jazz is one of the truly great American inventions. The genre originated alongside the blues traditions of the African-American communities of New Orleans in the late 19<sup>th</sup> century. While not specifically derived from the blues, Jazz was initially closely related to this genre. But whereas blues has always been defined by a certain type of chord progression, Jazz is much harder to define; its range is so broad, encompassing everything from ragtime and swing to modern fusion and new world music. Jazz is most definitely its own thing.</p>

<h2><strong>How Jazz Has Evolved Through the Years</strong></h2>
<p>Since its inception well over a century ago, various different styles of Jazz have evolved. Like with the blues, which evolved into rock and roll and its countless permutations, Jazz has also evolved into numerous and varied styles. In a similar manner to the evolution of blues, Jazz has also grown beyond the geographic and ethnic boundaries of its inception to be embraced and appropriated by people from all races, ethnicities and walks of live.</p>
<p>Jazz had its humble beginnings in the ragtime music of the late 19<sup>th</sup> century, as championed by the piano prowess of Scott Joplin. Around the turn of the 20<sup>th</sup> century, as ragtime continued to grow in popularity and morph into other musical forms, some of the most notable jazz legends were born, including Duke Ellington, Louis Armstrong and Cole Porter.</p>
<p>In the early 20<sup>th</sup> century Count Basie began his illustrious career, ushering in a rich and exuberant era of big-band swing, which was soon followed by the likes of Duke Ellington and Benny Goodman. By the 1940s, Jazz was all the rage in America and throughout Europe, boasting styles as varied as big-band swing and the bebop of Charlie Parker to the Gypsy Jazz of Django Rheinhardt.</p>
<p>Artists such as Thelonious Monk, Dave Brubeck, John Coltrane and Miles Davis pioneered the bridge between what we now think of as these more traditional forms of Jazz and its more modern styles, laying the groundwork for the genre’s contemporary interpretations and incarnations. From the reverent homage paid to its rich and vibrant history to the exploration of new forms within the genre, jazz continues to thrive today.</p>
<p>Jazz musicians continue to push sonic and cultural boundaries, creating ever new styles by continuously bridging cultural and ethnic divides, uniting the world through their artistic expression. In fact, one could even argue that Jazz, more than any other form of music, is a universally accepted and accessible genre of music that speaks to and is a reflection and expression of all cultures and ethnicities. We’ve already discussed <a href="https://www.thetalentband.com/5-tips-for-the-perfect-company-christmas-party/">top tips on how to create an unforgettable corporate Christmas party</a>, so we’re now casting our eyes ahead to New Year’s Eve.<span id="more-16800"></span></p>
<p>If you want to make this NYE the best party of the year, you need to start planning it right now. The last day of the year is usually spent with friends and family, so gather everyone together and throw an epic party they will never forget. Take a look at our tips below:</p>

However, when you’re planning something as monumental and year-defining as the company Christmas party it’s definitely a good idea to start as early as possible. We at The Talent have performed at enough Christmas parties and corporate events around the world to understand just how crucial the planning stage of such an event is. So, we’re here to help with our top five tips for planning the perfect company Christmas party.</p>

<h2><strong>October is the new November</strong></h2>
<p>Sure, Autumn’s only just begun – yes, there are still leaves on the trees – but step inside any shop and what do you see? Christmas décor galore! The point is, it’s never too early to start planning your company’s Christmas party. If you’re planning something with as many logistical moving parts as a corporate party, you’ll want to give yourself as much time as possible.</p>
<p>First things first, you’ll want to establish the date and time of the party. The best way of doing this is to send out provisional dates and times to all staff and let majority rule. Once you’ve got a date and time set for your party, you’ll next want to put together a guest list; knowing how many people are actually planning on attending will inform how big your budget will need to be.</p>
<h2><strong>Rallying the Christmas (Party) Elves </strong></h2>
<p>The next logical step is forming a Christmas party committee. This allows you to share the responsibility of tasks ahead as well as bounce ideas off each other. It’s important to pull in members from various departments so everyone in the company feels represented. Lastly, don’t be afraid to delegate responsibility, rather than trying to take everything on yourself.</p>
<p>Just as Santa would do with his workshop elves, you shouldn’t shy away from putting your little helpers to work. Just make sure that each person on the committee knows exactly what he or she is responsible for – the best way of doing this is to assign each task in writing through a shared document. Put one or two people in charge of food and beverages, another person in charge of entertainment, and so on; there’s also venue hire, decoration, transportation – these can all be assigned to individuals or groups. By assigning these various tasks to other people, you’re able to better manage and oversee the whole project.</p>
<h2><strong>How Big is Santa’s Budget?</strong></h2>
<p>Nailing down the party’s budget early on is crucial, as everything else will depend on this. Just like with the initial stages of planning, the sooner this can be done, the better. In allocating budget, your boss is going to want to know how many are planning on attending and what you’re planning on spending your budget on, so be ready have cost projection for every aspect of the party. An invaluable asset in putting this estimate together is talking with former Christmas party planners to find out how much was spent on previous Christmas parties. Don’t be haunted by the ghosts of Christmas parties past; be sure to take note of what’s worked in the past, and what hasn’t.</p>
<p>Once you’re ready to present this information to your boss, you should be able to get the maximum spend per person. Now that you have your overall budget, make sure your boss and everyone on your team are clear on exactly what costs will be incurred: food, drink, entertainment, transport, venue rental, decorations. Next, you’ll have to assign budgets for each of these aspects so that your elves can work their magic.</p>
<p>Unless your company already has an appropriate space, finding the right venue can be a daunting and time-consuming undertaking. The sooner you start looking, the more choices you’ll have. The size of the budget and guest list for your Christmas party will obviously dictate to a large degree the type of space you’re looking for. Also knowing your party’s theme and whether it will be a daytime or evening event will inform your choice of venue.</p>
<h2><strong>Deckin’ the Halls without Wreckin’ Laws</strong></h2>
<p>Just as important as having a dedicated and creative team in charge of decorations and set-up is delegating a crew who are responsible for break-down and cleaning up the venue after the party. Make sure everyone on your clean-up team knows in advance (and in writing) what their role is. Your hired venue might be able to help out with clean-up afterwards, but this is definitely something you need to have figured out early on in the planning stage.</p>
<p>Another very important thing to consider is whether or not you will arrange transportation to and from the event. It’s important to have a contingency plan for when Santa and the elves have imbibed a few too many Christmas spirits at the end of what will undoubtedly be a very successful party. Providing a shuttle or taxi service from the event could be a necessary spend to avoid any unnecessary accidents or mishaps. Make sure any relevant transport information is made readily available to everyone attending well in advance of the party.</p>
